The grind. A staple, intentional or not, of the MMORPG genre. Whether it is an item, experience, coin, or resources, the player is meant to defeat, kill, harvest, and gather over and over and over. For some, this is a relaxing exercise - something they can do with a video playing in the background or doing a mindless task at work. For others, it's a way to roleplay, meet others, or just fill some time.
